Everyone wants to be happy and have a great relationship with oneself and others who are close to their hearts. Between the ages of 40–60s, we often expect ourselves to be fairly settled in terms of our sense of self and our relationships. Yet, these expectations do not always match the actual realities of experiencing middle-age life. This life cycle period can be a mixture of all types of identity changes, disruptions and transitions that often generate chronic stress and relationship issues.
Research indicates that relationships are critical for holistic health and well- being. Our brains are actually hardwired to seek human connection for a sense of belonging, support and love. Healthy and supportive relationships with yourself and others afford many life benefits such as: less stress, greater ongevity, sense of well-being, enhanced ability to cope, greater self-esteem, greater mental-emotional health, increased ability for healthy parenting, and greater ease. Many middle-aged adults have never learned or developed effective relational skills or the healthy boundaries that are essential for effective communication and optimal functioning. As a result, many people tend to repeat and act-out unhealthy relationship patterns which keeps them stuck in old habits, negative reactions, and unproductive behaviors. Midlife at Ease provides middle-age people the opportunity to get out of this painful rut by developing the wisdom and skill-base to cultivate the art of healthy relationships.
Dr. Sydney Spears is a clinical social worker whose speciality is working with middle-age adults (40s-60s) who have been experiencing personal struggles with their sense of self, relationship stressors such as divorce and issues of grief and loss.
